Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has an optimistic perspective about the potential impact of AI on the American workforce.
In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Bezos predicted that productivity gains from AI will allow more families to survive on one income and workers to support themselves by working only three days a week.
“Some people will also decide, you know what? I can support my family by working three days a week,” he said. “That’s what productivity in the economy means.”
In fact, Bezos said his main worry is not that AI will lead to a lack of jobs, but that it will lead to a labor shortage if people respond to productivity gains by working less.
“It’s going to actually be difficult to hire people,” he said. “The productivity in the economy is going to make it so that if people don’t want to work two jobs, they won’t have to.”
Bezos also predicted that AI could generate double-digit productivity gains across the economy.
When pressed about recent mass layoffs at Amazon, Bezos said they were necessary because the company added so many jobs during the pandemic. The tech giant eliminated about 30,000 corporate roles in October 2025 and January 2026 in the largest workforce reduction in company history.
As for concerns about data centers, Bezos said they can be built in space and that there is “good reason” to do so, noting that his company Blue Origin has requested permission from the government to launch more than 50,000 satellites that would serve as “orbital data centers.”
Bezos also said the government should take a “light hand” in regulating AI while the technology is developing and that regulations should be targeted at AI’s harmful applications, not the underlying technology itself.
“You don’t want to regulate knives,” he said. “You want to regulate murder.”
